Shunyata Venom Defender MPDA Noise Reduction

Article by WL Low

What could be more fun than an easy to use, and bring improvement to the sound product, than Shunyata Venom Defender? Yeah, I could think of similarly fun products from the stables of Audio Prism and Nordost too.

But today, we talk about the Shunyata. It’s a small apparatus for plugging in to a power strip, any power strip, and it’s supposed to do wonders to the sound of your Hi-Fi system.

Remember, that this is strictly a tweak category product, and at best expect a make up job result. DO NOT, expect the Shunyata to cure your audio system ills, and I think you’ll be fine.

Priced RM 885/piece, the Shunyata Venom Defender, is not the cheapest, nor the most expensive compared to other “just as fun” product available out there.

I brought the unit back to my audio cave, plugged the Shunyata in to my existing Sine, 6 outlet, unfiltered power strip, fired up my hifi and press play on my CD player. I was greeted with the most silent background ever, totally noise and hash free. That silence, lack of background noise, allows the mid range rich tonal quality of my system to be flushed out all together. That lack of white hash in the back ground, made imaging pop out more from the staging, making more than elbow room, and presenting music in a fuller, and more realistic density. I think another way to describe it is that sound staging and imaging is less like paper cut pop out book experience(i.e. flat!).

If the doesn’t sound like much of an improvement, but with all that small bits added up, the sound emerging from the speakers seemed more coherent and musically engaging. I found my self listening to music more often and for longer sessions. That must surely count for something right?

Don’t ask me how a small contraption like the Shunyata Venom Defender works, as a quick check with the manufacturers website will tell you all the details and technology used. Also don’t ask me how it compares to other similarly fun products out there using different technologies out there. All I can say is, try before your buy, and buy the one that the sound you like best.

For now, I am keeping the Shunyata Venom Defender. John of CMY Audio & Visual tells me that I’d get better results, if I used the Shunyata Venom PS8 power strip as well! So I am waiting to get my hands to that too.

  1. I have dedicated circuits 1 per monoblock amp and 1 for power conditioner (for components TV, Blu-ray, preamps etc…) each power outlet is a duplex with one unused per duplex.
Will this have an effect if plugged into the unused outlet on each dedicated circuit?
