QED Reference Audio 40 Interconnects and Speaker Cables

Bridging the Gap

Article by Dick Tan

QED, a British audio company founded a little over four decades ago by industry stalwarts Bob Abraham and Lan Vine started off producing quality high performance but affordable audio products.

Some of you may recall the quaint little integrated amplifiers and speakers that were all time favourites among enthusiasts looking for the audio big bang but with precious little budget to spare.

Today QED, part of the huge Amour Home Electronics conglomerate has trimmed its operation to specialise in producing largely interconnects and speakers cables for the hi-fi and home theatre market.  It is in this segment of the AV market that QED has managed to carve itself a highly enviable reputation for producing products that work remarkably well yet won’t leave you penniless.

It’s latest range of speaker cables and interconnects, the Reference Audio 40 Series (40 to mark its  40th Anniversary 2 years ago) include the Reference  Audio 40 Interconnect, the Signature Audio 40 interconnect and the Reference Audio 40 XT-40 speaker cable.

Both interconnects feature pure copper stands arranged in a special complimentary way.  The positive and negative portions of the conductors are of different diameters, which QED claims allows the varying levels of the high frequency portion of the signal to arrive at the contact point at precisely the same time, significantly reducing time smear and improving clarity during the process.

This is where the similarity between the Reference Audio and Signature Audio ends.  Although both uses QED’s proprietary super fit Analoc plugs the former features gold plated conductors while the more expensive Signature Audio comes with Rhodium plating.

Retail price for the one (1) metre Reference Audio is RM700.00 while the Signature Audio, also at one (1) metre length goes for RM1, 412.00

Available at standard 3 metre lengths QED’s new XT-40 speaker cable features the company’s advanced Z-Tube technology whereby a massive 4mm cross section area is said to be able to deliver a perceivably superior audio advantage by maintaining a flatter frequency response more uniformly across the entire conductor area.

The 3 metre XT-40 which comes terminated in sturdy 4mm ‘banana’ plugs retail for RM818 per stereo set.
