First of all, I have to state that Toslink can handle up to 24/192 files. And that also depends on the DAC. Some DACs accept only 24/96 maximum with Toslink.
I have compared Toslink with co-axial cable using a CD player. In fact, AV2day held a demo of such a comparison during the Kuala Lumpur International AV Show a few years ago. I can state that a glass Toslink can sound better than a co-axial cable.

Of course like everything in hifi, our own experiences may not be empirical at all. I think perhaps system and cable VS transfer format synergy comes to play here?
