KLIAVS 2024: WiiM Ultra — affordable way to stream music

Thiban Chandra, owner of TechX with a WiiM Ultra.

For those newbie audiophiles who attended the recent KLIAVS 2024 and were shocked and discouraged by the prices of the high-end components which amount to hundreds of thousands of ringgit, don’t worry.

There are some really affordable components which perform well. They may not have the bells and whistles of the glossy and classy high-end ultra-expensive components, but they will not require you to sell your kidney and the sound quality is not too bad.

One such component is the WiiM Ultra and I saw quite a number of WiiM Ultras in the demo systems of exhibitors at the KLIAVS. TechX had boxes and boxes of them and quite a number was sold.

The WiiM Ultra retails at RM1,999 and is a wireless music streamer with variable and fixed output options, full touch-screen operation, Roon Ready support planned (with future update), multi-room playback compatible, digital outputs to connect to an external DAC, Spotify Connect device for easy playback from the Spotify app and Tidal Connect device for easy playback from the Tidal app.

It has an aluminum case featuring a 3.5″ glass-covered touchscreen. Inside are a 32-bit ES9038 Q2M SABRE DAC, and high fidelity headphone amplifier TPA6120A2, which deliver outstanding audio clarity with a THD+N of -116dB and an SNR of 121 dB for Line Out, up to -99 dB THD+N and 119 dB SNR for headphone out.

It offers USB, Optical, Coaxial, RCA outputs, and HDMI ARC, plus multiple inputs including RCA, Phono, and Optical. It’s designed to flawlessly integrate with both digital and analog systems. Its wireless section features Wi-Fi 6E and BT 5.3 with two antennas offering stable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi audio streaming.
