James recently reached out and asked me to come over to meet the new 32inch behemoth from Ascendo as well as sample the newly configured Theatre setup comprising of Ascendo subwoofers and speakers. To the uninitiated, Ascendo Immersive Audio (AIA for short) is a speaker and amplifier manufacturer that builds some of the most insanely high-performance subwoofers and speakers out there. For some context, the biggest subwoofer they currently produce is an 80 inch one (nope that’s not a typo).

I knew I was going to enjoy it given the kind of subs that Ascendo produces and also AV Designs great track record with HT. I wasn’t prepared however for what I was about to experience. In my years of movie going and testing out systems, I have never felt the levels performance like this. There were 5 subwoofers in the ensemble line-up, which comprises of 2 units of 21-inch passive subs, another 2 units of 18-inch passive subs and finally a titanic 24-inch sealed, active sub.
All these passive and active beasts are driven by AIA’s power amplifiers which produce a combined output of 26000 watts (again that is not a typo). This frightening level of power allow the subs to perform at demonic levels while maintaining uncharacteristic control. The subs stop and start almost as quick as cute little sealed subs, defying logic at times. Testament to the engineering put into getting this right.

The additional power, depth, speed and control make any movie watching experience an epic one. A test sequence from the tank battle between the Yanks and Germans in “Fury” just blew me away. Every bit of weight of the German Tiger tank was felt, not just heard. This is not just audio you hear, but one you feel! Weight and punch at infrasonic levels like this will make monster movies or any movie with larger-than-life scale absolutely satisfying.

Returning home, listening to any system just felt impotent by comparison. A price that will come when fed with such epic bass levels. A price, to me, well worth paying. If you like watching movies with excitement and love your bass big, and I mean really big. You really should head over to the AV Designs showroom to check out these insane subwoofers for yourself.
